After Action Report

On October 5th the Wayne County ARES group participated in a statewide Simulated Emergency Test (SET).
The scenario involved a three day statewide powder outage that would require radio operators to be deployed to every police/fire station in the county as well as the two hospitals. These operators would be expected to relay simplex radio traffic back to the EOC located in Wooster.
At 9:40am a text message was sent to all ARES members using the Wireless Emergency Communication system. The message requested members to check in to a simplex net on 146.550 at 9:50AM for further instructions.
At 9:50AM  a total of seven members “checked in” to the net and were directed to the various locations in Wayne County and told to check-in via radio upon arrival.

Wayne County ARES will be playing a part in the 2019 Nationwide Situational Emergency Test

Hey gang, I am excited to say that Wayne County ARES will be playing a part in the 2019 Nationwide Situational Emergency Test (SET). This event will be taking place on Saturday October 5th.

The good news is that nearly anyone can play a part in this. No special training or equipment (a 2 meter mobile is helpful) is required. In a nutshell the exercise is designed to allow us to create a map that outlines simplex 2 meter coverage. To do this right we need YOU to play along.

On the day of the event we will operate in the spirit of the exercise. Remember, the power has been out for days, and conventional communication has stopped. Yes, even the 2 meter repeaters are silent. As a result of this outage, I will NOT be able to contact you by phone on the 5th. The alert for help will go out over 146.460 simplex.

ARES Kickoff meeting to take place on Sept 16th

Earlier this year I (Doug Hunter) was appointed as the Wayne County Emergency Coordinator by the American Radio Relay League. On September 16th at 6:30pm, I will be hosting an informational meeting for those who are interested in becoming involved in ARES.

As you may know, the ARES acronym stands for Amateur Radio Emergency services. Members of ARES are licensed ham radio operators who donate their time, equipment and radio skills in the event of an emergency. Many of the current members are older and I am looking to provide a “jump start” to the group.
While true emergences are few and far between, these folks often help with other local events that can benefit from radio communications. Recent local events include the Wooster Heart and Sole race, Casey’s Challenge wheelchair race, and the Wooster Woo-du race. In a few weeks I will be providing radio assistance at the Akron Marathon.
